Winter Solstice
24" x 18"
Mixed Media

In a month from now comes the Solstice. For a brief moment, night and day will balance...a perfect equilibrium, and then the scales will tip in favor of the sun. The moon will lose supremacy of the sky and we will begin the slow climb back into the light.

In the meantime, somnolence will take over. That slow sleepy siren call of blue evenings and silent dreams.

Rising out of the snow flowers, Mother Earth looks around her, the sun dancing over her shoulder like an angel's wing. The black raven soars over head - a part of the dark - almost taking form from a thought in Mother Earth's head, springing forth like Athena from the Skull of Zeus. Raven escorts the moon away, gentle promises of her return cawing over the still, cool air.

Memories of fire dance out of that dreaming mind as well, but the time is not ripe. This is a false dawn, and our earth will nestle into slumber once more, pulling a white blanket of snow over her shoulders.

She'll sleep 'til sunrise, and springtime.

Wow, that is really beautiful. I came across your website via PG's blog middle of nowhere and am rather captivated. I am an old friend of PG and new to blogging but have been drawn to this world. I absolutely love your illustrations and sketches, I shall keep tuning in! M

Aaron. I have this painting copied in black and white for one of my clients. Every morning she tells someone how beautiful it is.
